Transportation and human mobility have become part of development in many developing countries. In Nigerian cities, this vital activity has also led to problems associated with large quantities of waste generation and has become a management issue for both local and state governments.
The environmental cleanliness of the motor-parks is very important since intra/intercity movements take place through these routes. These transit points and contacts can be a source of contacting/transmitting infections and diseases if adequate measures are not put in place for proper waste management. In addition, refuse generation in motor parks and hygienic management practices are less understood. It is based on these foregoing reasons that Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation on the 20th of January 27, 2022 deemed it necessary to visit Textile Motor Park Basiri, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria as part of her monthly sensitization exercise to sensitize the drivers, passengers and sellers present at the motor park on the need for proper waste collection, storage and disposal in their environment.
The Founder of TGED Foundation, Oluwaseyi Ebenezer, started by giving a brief introduction about the organization and what it stands for. She went further to sensitize the people on the need for proper waste management. According to her, a filthy environment attracts diseases and also results in other environmental issues. She pointed out that market areas generate large quantities of waste including motor parks. The reason for this, according to her, is because the majority of the parks in the state do not have a waste bin or designated site for waste disposal. In addition, she noted that the majority of the passengers that come to the park, after buying, eating and drinking, end up disposing of their waste on the ground around the park, along roadsides and inside gutters, thereby littering the environment. She calls on them to desist from such a bad attitude. Furthermore, she charged the drivers to take it as their responsibility and ensure that their passengers dispose of their waste properly, by providing a waste basket around the park and also inside their vehicles. She implored them to always see the need to clean their environment and also develop the habit of disposing of their waste properly because failure to do so will attract diseases.
Mrs Oguntuase, one of the volunteers of the TGED Foundation joined her voice and pointed out the fact that, our climate is changing and one of the reasons for this change is as a result of the bad waste management practices such as burning waste. She further noted that since our agriculture is climate dependent, the carbon-dioxide released into the environment through burning of waste affects the weather pattern and in turn has a major impact on our agricultural sector. She also implored them not to burn their waste and also charged them to develop the attitude of disposing their waste properly inside the waste basket and at any designated spot provided by the government.
The Chairman of the motor park, Mr Akeem thanked the organization for their effort in putting together such an educative meeting on the need for proper waste management and promised that they will endeavor to put measures in place based on their capacity to help ensure proper waste management within their environment. At the end of the sensitization exercise, TGED Foundation donated waste baskets to the drivers to put inside their vehicles and waste nylons to the traders to collect their waste before disposal.
