There is growing momentum around the world to harness the power of education to combat and adapt to climate change and ensure young people, especially girls and boys from the most marginalized communities, have the critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills needed to take action to combat climate change. Education on its own has been proven as an essential factor in the ever more urgent global fight against climate change and climate change education is more important now than ever. Understanding the causes and effects of climate change is the first step in shifting mindsets, establishing new ways of limiting its impact, and adapting to its unavoidable effects.
In line with this, Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation launched her Eco Savers School Project (ESSP), targeted at educating school children on climate change. The Foundation was at St Joseph Nursery and Primary School Ado-Ekiti on the 21st of March 22, 2022 to kick start the program. The major aim of the program is to help raise awareness among the little ones about climate change and how they can join in the unending fight and help combat the climate crisis. Knowledge regarding this phenomenon will help young people to understand and tackle the consequences of global warming, encourage them to change their attitude and also help them to make informed decisions and adapt to what is already a global emergency.
Among the highlight of the program was a presentation on climate change, this was followed by a short video on climate change, titled “The Time is Now”. After that, questions sheets on climate change were distributed to the students to access the level of understanding of what they have learnt. Immediately after that, another climate song titled “Save the Earth” was played for the children to sing and dance. At the end of the program, TGED FOUNDATION (ESSP) word puzzle booklet was handed over to the children to take home and continue learning about their environment and particularly climate change.
We are all aware that our carbon emission needs to sink to zero by 2050 at the latest to stop climate change. To achieve this goal, we must radically change our lives and economies. However, as explained by Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, in their study on “Social Tipping Dynamics for Stabilizing Earth’s Climate by 2050”, “Sustainability cannot be imposed, it has to be learned.” It is therefore crucial to first understand the causes and effects of climate change before considering new ways of preventing it. The UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report 2020 endorses this view when they opined that education, especially when focused on children and young people, is a key factor in helping to curb climate change.
