According to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, in their study on “Social Tipping Dynamics for Stabilizing Earth’s Climate by 2050”, “Sustainability cannot be imposed, it has to be learned.” It is, therefore, crucial to first understand the causes and effects of climate change before considering new ways of preventing it.
In line with this, Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation (TGED Foundation) visited Florence Court International Nursery and Primary School Ado-Ekiti for her Eco Savers School Project (ESSP). ESSP is targeted at educating young people on the climate change crisis, in order to help them understand and tackle its consequences, encourage them to change their attitude and also help them to make informed decisions and adapt to what is already a global emergency.
The highlight of the program includes a presentation on climate change, a climate change song and a pre-test and post-test questions on climate change. All these were done in order to access the student’s level of understanding on the issue under discussion which is climate change.
At the end of the program, ESSP Word Puzzle Booklet was distributed to the children as a take-home assignment, to encourage them to continue learning about their environment and particularly climate change.
In addition, the result of the pre-test and post-test questions revealed that 68% of the students scored above 70% in the pre-test while the post-test result revealed that 90% of the students scored above 70%. The increase in the percentage of students that scored above 70% in the post-test is an indication that the majority of the students gained additional knowledge during the course of the program.
At TGED Foundation, we strongly believe that education is crucial to promote climate action as it helps people especially young people understand and address the impacts of the climate crisis, at the same time, empowering them with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to act as agents of change.
