We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe, the water we use, the medicine we take, the food we enjoy, to the shelter we live under. To commemorate the 2022 World Forest Day as well as promoting our organization’s mission which is helping to achieve a sustainable environment, Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation (TGED Foundation) took her campaign to All Soul’s Anglican Grammar School Ado-Ekiti to commemorate the International Day of Forest 2022. The reason for this was to teach the students the need to care for the planet earth as these young people hold the majority stake in the world’s population, with nearly 1.8 billion people within the ages of 10 and 24 years worldwide, according to United Nations statistics.
The team lead of TGED Foundation Oluwaseyi Ebenezer in her address called on the future generations to care for their environment and also imbibe the culture of tree planting. Together with the Ekiti State Forestry Commission, a total of five Obeche tree seedlings (an indigenous tree) were planted around the school compound to mark the International Day of Forest 2022 celebration.
The Principal of the school, Mr Adegoke in his closing remark thanked the management of TGED Foundation for picking their school to commemorate this important occasion and promised that he will see to it that the plants are well taken care of by the students to ensure its survival.
In addition to this, earlier that day, the team lead of TGED Foundation was also with Hon Kayode Olaosebikan, the Chairman Forestry Commission and Mr Famuagun Matthew, Acting Executive Secretary, Forestry Commission Ekiti State at Broadcasting Station of Ekiti State on a Television program tagged ‘Day Break Nigeria’ to share their views on the importance of forest as a way of commemorating the 2022 International Day of Forest.
During the course of the program, Oluwaseyi stressed the importance of not cutting down trees in our surroundings and called on house owners to desist from the habit of using concrete to pave the surroundings of their compounds. She emphasized the need to imbibe the culture of having green spaces around us as this will give way for runoff water to infiltrate into the ground thereby recharging groundwater and at the same time reducing the risk of flooding.
